INFORMATION
Glass Beach is a beach in MacKerricher State Park near Fort Bragg, California, that is abundant in sea glass created from years of dumping garbage into an area of coastline near the northern part of the town.
HISTORY
In 1906, Fort Bragg residents established an official water dump site behind the Union Lumber Company onto what is now known as "Site 1". Locals referred to it as "The Dumps." Fires were often lit to reduce the size of the trash pile.
When this beach filled in 1949, the dump was moved north to what is now known as "Glass Beach", which remained an active dump site until 1967. They closed this area in 1967.
Various cleanup programs were undertaken through the years to correct the damage.
There are three Glass Beach sites in Fort Bragg where trash was dumped into the ocean between 1906 and 1967.
- Site Two (1943-1949)
- Site Three (1949–1967 - "Glass Beach")
It 1998, the private owner of the property began a five year process of working with the California Coastal Conservancy and the California Integrated Waste Management Board for the cleanup and sale of the property to the state.
OPINIONS
Twenty years ago when I came to glass beach it was basically undeveloped and it wasn't that crowded. However, today with all of the advertising about all of the glass, which is disappearing because people are carrying away by the bucket loads and large crowds this place is no longer a stop for me
It is a wonder round wonder reminding this was a dump turned into a work of art. Walking through the glass makes a wonderful sound.
Glass beach was beautiful! Our family had a great time playing in the "Crystal" we took the difficult trail and our 8 year old was able to climb up and down the cliff path either, but it is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking.
I can’t believe the restriction on sea glass!!!!!! Fort Bragg has so much to lose!!!! We’ve been going there for 12 years & now we must stop???? Your town will surely suffer! The glass is garbage!! I’m getting everyone I know to get onboard rejecting this.
